Monday, January 21st marks the 26th anniversary of Martin Luther King Jr. National Day of Service. This federal holiday was created to charge Americans from all walks of life to work together to provide solutions to our most pressing national problems. In the wake of the tragic shooting in Connecticut, the need for a day of solidarity and community building feels stronger than ever.
Dr. King believed in a nation of freedom and justice for all, and encouraged all citizens to live up to the purpose and potential of America by applying the principles of nonviolence to make this country a better place to live.
Instead of a day off, make it a day on! The Watershed Project will be hosting service projects at two sites in Richmond as a way to empower Bay Area communities to bridge barriers and create positive change.
On the Shoreline
Join us at Point Pinole Regional Shoreline. It’s a stunningly beautiful park with spectacular views of the Bay and its wildlife. We will be removing invasive plants and picking up trash on the beach. Educational materials and displays will help teach adults and children alike about the merits of caring for our environment. Bring your family, friends and neighbors to this fun and inspirational day.
Where: Point Pinole Regional Shoreline (Directions: From I-80 in Richmond, exit at the Richmond Parkway. From the Richmond Parkway, turn right onto Giant Highway and proceed to the park entrance.)
When: Monday, January 21, 2013
Time: 9:30 am-12:30 pm
At the Greenway
We’re hosting an array of exciting projects at the Greenway. The Richmond Greenway trail runs along the southern boundary of the Iron Triangle community. Once a foreboding relic of Richmond’s industrial history, the Greenway creates a new connection between Richmond and the network of East Bay communities by establishing links to the Ohlone and Bay Trails.
The Watershed Project has been working for more than two years on our adopted section of the greenway, between 6th Street and 8th Street. Our vision is a blooming and healthy green space for people to congregate and enjoy nature within their community. For the National Day of Service, we will offer planting and landscaping activities for volunteers to join.
Where: Richmond Greenway at 6th street
(Directions: From I-580, exit Harbour Way heading North. Continue on Harbour and take a left on Ohio st. to 6th st. We will be on the south side of the bike path on the east side of 6th st.)
When: Monday, January 21, 2013
Time: 9:30 am-12:30 pm
