Coastal Cleanup Day at the Wildcat Creek Fish Ladder
September 15, 2018 @ 9:00 am - 3:00 pm
The Wildcat-San Pablo Creeks Watershed Council is conducting a Maintenance and Monitoring Project on the Wildcat Creek Fish Ladder to help better understand its operation in terms of fish passage. As part of that plan Trout Unlimited, the Contra Costa County Flood Control and Water Conservation District, the California Department of Fish and Wildlife, the Cities of San Pablo and Richmond, and other for-profit and non-profit organizations will be cleaning out the ladder on Coastal Cleanup Day in preparation for monitoring this 2018/2019 wet season.
The volunteer work will entail shoveling out sediment and gravel that have accumulated in the ladder. Maintenance workers may then assist the volunteers in removing the sediment from the flood control channel. Volunteers will also pick up trash and provide food and water to volunteers working in the ladder.
Homeless persons and encampments may be located in the area, so volunteers must be considerate to the homeless. We will be assisted by staff from CORE (https://cchealth.org/h3/services.php) who are familiar with this specific community.
Volunteers should bring gloves, hat, sunglasses, sunscreen, long pants, and sturdy shoes or boots. It may be dusty so some may wish to bring a dust mask. Tools and supplies will be provided by the District; water, snacks and lunch to be provided by Trout Unlimited. Volunteers will be asked to sign liability waivers for the Flood Control District.

Directions: The Wildcat Creek Fish Ladder is east of the North Richmond Ballpark. Park along Fred Jackson Way and gather at the Ballpark at 9am. From there we will take the Wildcat Creek Trail to the east (upstream). The trail leads directly to the fish ladder. It is about a 5 minute walk. Alternatively if you wish to park closer to the ladder, take DaVilla Road which goes around Verde Elementary School and then to area where you can park nearer the flood control channel and fish ladder.
